What is FRMCA?
FRMCA is the acronym for the new Foundations of Restaurant Management & Culinary Arts materials. You may have previously heard this referred to as ProStart 3e.

I keep hearing and seeing Year 1, Year 2, Level 1 and Level 2 – what do they mean? What’s the difference between them?
Year 1 and Year 2 refer to the two books in the Becoming a Restaurant and Foodservice Professional first and second editions
Level 1 and Level 2 refer to the two books in the Foundations of Restaurant Management & Culinary Arts first edition

Is there a new Exam Administration Handbook Available?
Which answer sheets should my students use and where should I purchase them?
Beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year, all students should be using the new answer sheet sold through Pearson.
Even if you are testing your students on the Becoming a Restaurant & Foodservice Professional Year 1 or Year 2 exams,
you must use the new answer sheet. The new answer sheet has been redesigned for enhanced usability, to enable student
access to scores and to support electronic certificates of recognition

How long will exams be offered for the second edition?
Exams based on the second edition will be offered and scored through the 2013-2014 academic year (through July 2014).

What is the Certificate of Recognition now being offered?
All students will receive an electronic certificate of recognition for passing the Year 1, Year 2,
Level 1 and Level 2 exams. These certificates come from the National Restaurant Association.

Will students receive a certificate for passing the Becoming a Restaurant and Foodservice Professional exams?
Yes, certificates will now be offered to students passing those exams. In order to receive a certificate
for passing the exam, you must administer the new exam forms released in July 2010. Certificates will not be offered
to students using outdated exam form numbers 4511 for ProStart Year 1 or 4512 for ProStart Year 2.

Are the certificates of recognition for passing the exam replacing the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement?
No, the new electronic certificates acknowledge that students have passed the exam only.
The ProStart National Certificate of Achievement is still the highest certificate in the ProStart program,
and leads to scholarship opportunities and articulation benefits. Students completing the full ProStart
program will now graduate with three certificates – two certificates of recognition from the National Restaurant
Association and one ProStart National Certificate of Achievement from the NRAEF.

Can students get a ProStart National Certificate of Achievement using either edition of the curriculum?
Yes, they can receive a COA for using either edition of the curriculum, or for combining the two curriculums.
Students must pass one exam based on the first year of curriculum (Year 1 or Level 1) and one exam based on the
second year of curriculum (Year 2 or Level 2), along with working 400 mentored hours in the industry.

When will the 2010-2011 exams be released?
The exams are scheduled to be released in July 2010 and piloted through December 2010. We will then release a second version of the exam in January 2011.

Where will teachers find the Exam Information Form?
The Exam Information Form will no longer be accessed through your state ProStart Coordinator.
All exams (print-based or online) must be scheduled online. When you schedule the exam, it will generate an
Exam Information Form for you to send in with the answer sheets (if you administer a print-based exam).

If I just signed up for web access, do I need to reregister?
Yes, all ProStart educators who registered using the old system (sending an email to servicecenter@restaurant.org) must
re-register using the online application. Existing access to the ProStart web site will be terminated on October 31, 2010
if you have not re-registered using the new system.

How do I access the exams?
In order to access the exams, enter Educator Services. From the Exam Administration menu, click “Schedule/Print Exams”.
You will then be walked through the process to schedule an exam, which culminates in a link to download the exams and the
Exam Information Form for print-based exams or a Class Access Code for online exams.

What is the format of the exam and what is the passing score?
The exams are multiple choice. For the Year 1 and Year 2 exams (80 questions each), the passing score is 75%.
For the Level 1 and Level 2 exams (100 questions each), the passing score is 70%.

I have students who took Year 1, and I’d like to them to take Level 2 during their second year in the program – how should I transition between the two?
The National Restaurant Association is preparing bridge materials to help you transition
between editions. This will include a curriculum map showing what information moved between
books (i.e used to be in Year 1 and is now in Level 2, etc.). We anticipate that the bridge
materials will be available at the end of July.

Will there be a new Workplace Competency Checklist?
Yes, there will be a new Workplace Competency Checklist available for the new FRMCA edition.
It will be posted in Educator Services section under the Administer ProStart Program in August 2010.

My school district will not approve funds to transition to FRMCA just yet, how long will individual replacement second edition materials (textbooks, activity books, etc.) be available for?
We will have replacement materials available in our warehouse through June 2011. At that time, we will reassess the need to retain materials longer.

I teach students whose first language is Spanish – are any FRMCA materials being offered in Spanish?
The FRMCA curriculum materials are only being offered in English currently. However, we are offering the Level 1 exam (print-based and online) in Spanish. Based on the success and usage of that exam, we will possibly offer the Level 2 exam in Spanish next year.

How do I access my score?
Go to prostart.restaurant.org and click on “Check My Scores” under Student Services.
You will be prompted to login with an existing User ID and Password, or create a new one and include
your email address and class number. Once logged in the screen will change and be titled “My Exams”.
Click on the correct class number to retrieve your class score analysis. Download the help document.

How do I print my Certificate?
Go to prostart.restaurant.org click on “Print Certificate” under Student Services.
You will be prompted to login with an existing User ID and Password, or create a new
one and include your email address and class number. Once completed you will be able
to select the certificate you would like to print by clicking on “Print/Reprint” button
on the right hand side of the screen Download the help document.

I don’t have an email address, how do I access my score or certificate?
In order to access your score and electronic certificate, you must have an email address. We recommend setting up a free gmail, hotmail or yahoo email account.

If I took the test last week or last year, can I get a certificate of recognition for passing the exam?
No, certificates of recognition are not retroactive. They will only be offered to students taking the new exams launched in July 2010.

I failed the exam – how do I retest?
You may retest up to three times within a 90-day period. If you are interested, let your teacher know that you’d like to retest. He or she will then order you a new answer sheet or exam access code and administer the retest.

How do I obtain a refund if I do not accept the Test Use Agreement?
If you disagree with the terms and conditions of the Test Use Agreement you are eligible to receive a refund for equal to the cost of an unused Answer Seat or Seat Registration Number.
To receive a refund the Test Use Agreement Refund Form must be submitted along with the required documentation as stated on the form.

How will I approve teachers as program educators?
You will receive an email for all Program Educators applying within your state. As the State Coordinator you will approve the individual and send the email information back to the Service Center of the National Restaurant Association to complete processing.
